An emphasis on education.

The Connecticut Hair and Transplant Group places a strong emphasis on education. Before
a client can understand what his or her needs are, CHTG believes they must first have an
understanding of the natural
hair growth process and what causes hair loss.
An individual's scalp is composed of 3 layers; the epidermis, the dermis and subcutaneous layers. The hair itself is surrounded by blood vessels, nerves, muscles, glands and millions of cells. Aside from providing oxygen and nutrients, blood flow promotes cellular growth which in turn builds the flexible protein known as hair.
The average person has 100,000 hairs on their head, each of which go through a three part cycle. The first stage is hair growth, and lasts between 2 and 6 years. The next cycle is called the dormant stage. During this 2 to 6 week period the hair begins to pull away from the root. Finally, during the last 4 to 8 weeks, the hair undergoes the fall out stage. As each hair falls out a new one prepares to grow.
There are many reasons for hair loss including scalp bacteria, stress, poor nutrition and genetic pattern balding. In many cases hair loss may be caused by a combination of these factors. However nearly 95% of hair loss appears to be caused primarily by genetic pattern baldness. Since pattern balding is genetic it is treatable but can't be cured.
In the case of pattern balding, an individual's genetic make-up has programmed their body
to store an excessive amount of testosterone, which combines with other enzymes and chemicals to form a waxy-like gel. This substance "blankets" the hair root area and constricts blood flow to the hair follicle. Without this vital flow of blood, cellular activity is slowed down causing the cells to produce a thinner, poorer quality of hair which is then vulnerable to other negative influences.
The stages of Male Pattern Baldness can be classified by the Hamilton Scale, first developed by J.D. Hamilton, M.D. in 1951 as illustrated. Each illustration depicts a different stage of hair loss
which in turn indicates the replacement method best suited to each client.
